A few ideas to get you rolling

Sushi comes in all shapes and sizes, but there’s no denying that the roll is one of the most popular forms. Once your sushi making kit arrives, these rolls are a great place to start. Feeling adventurous? Pick your own ingredients! Sushi can be made with virtually any ingredient combination that you can think of!

Temaki

DIFFICULTY 3/5

Temaki is a cone-shaped piece of nori on the outside with the ingredients spilling out of the wide end. It must be eaten quickly after being made because the nori cone soon absorbs moisture.

(hand roll)

Hosomaki

DIFFICULTY 2/5

Hosomaki is a small, cylindrical piece with nori on the outside. They generally only contain one filling.

(thin rolls)

Futomaki

DIFFICULTY 5/5

Futomaki is a large, cylindrical piece, usually with nori on the outside. They are often made with two or three fillings that are chosen for their complementary tastes, textures and colours.

(fat rolls)

Uramaki

DIFFICULTY 4/5

Uramaki is made with two or three fillings. The rice is on the outside and the nori on the inside. There may be roe, toasted sesame seeds or shichimi chilli pepper coating the outside.

(inside-out rolls)

Sushi Cheat Sheet

Get started straight away with the cheat sheet included in every kit. Follow the step-by-step instructions to prepare perfect sushi rice then grab the bamboo mat and start rolling!

Try nigiri (hand-pressed sushi), temaki (hand rolls), hosomaki (thin rolls), futomaki (fat rolls) and uramaki (inside-out rolls) then complete your Japanese meal with the included miso soup and pickled ginger.

Miso Soup

All of our sushi kits include 12 servings of tasty miso soup. Miso soup is traditionally served with many Japanese meals, and is delicious before eating sushi. It’s found everywhere in Japan, from convenience stores to the finest restaurants.

As one of the cornerstones of Japanese cooking, it can be eaten at breakfast, lunch or dinner, and with everything from sashimi to steak to Japanese curry (included in the Osaka Sushi Kit).

Get Creative

Get creative with the recipe book included in the Osaka Sushi Kit which will coach you in the basics of Japanese cuisine. Try classic dishes, such as hand-made sushi and assorted fish rolls, as well as lesser-known regional recipes.

Gift Wrapping

Treat someone to a present they’ll actually use. Our kits make memorable, fun and practical gifts for food lovers and our Osaka Sushi Kit comes complete with a traditional bamboo basket.

Sushi just the way you like it

Sushi is an incredibly versatile food so making it yourself allows you a lot of freedom. Seafood is the obvious starting point with tuna, mackerel, blue marlin, swordfish, yellowtail, salmon, trout, eel, squid, clams, scallop, shrimp, octopus and crab all making delicious additions. But, really, almost any fish can be used to make sushi.

Cucumber, carrot, avocado, asparagus, jalapeños and onions also make great starting points but it definitely doesn’t have to stop there. Try making unusual rolls from ingredients you already have. Fruit-wise, pineapple, mango, apple and pear are fantastically tasty!
